Fridge Freezer Not Cooling — Priority Repair Guide
A fridge or freezer that isn't cooling is a food safety issue. Here's what to do and why prompt repair matters.
Immediate steps
Move perishable food to a cool bag with ice packs or a neighbour's fridge. Check the temperature setting — it may have been accidentally changed. Check that the fridge isn't in 'holiday mode'.
Check the door seals
Run your hand around the door seal while the fridge is running. You shouldn't feel cold air escaping. A perished seal means the compressor runs continuously without maintaining temperature.
Is the compressor running?
Listen for a low hum from the back of the fridge — that's the compressor. If you can't hear it, the compressor may have failed. This is the most costly repair but is usually still more economical than replacement for appliances under 8 years old.
Frost-free models — defrost cycle fault
Frost-free fridge freezers have a defrost heater and timer that prevents ice build-up. If these fail, ice forms on the evaporator coils and the appliance stops cooling effectively even though the compressor is running.
