Oven Not Heating — What to Check First
An oven that won't heat is one of the most common appliance faults. Some causes you can check yourself; others need an engineer.
Check the clock and timer
Many ovens won't operate if the timer is set to automatic mode or the clock hasn't been set after a power cut. Check that the clock shows the correct time and that the function selector isn't set to 'auto'.
Test the grill separately
If the grill works but the oven doesn't, the main oven element has likely failed. If neither works, the issue may be with the thermostat or control board.
Check the fuse board
A tripped circuit breaker can cut power to the oven. Check your consumer unit for tripped breakers and reset them. If the breaker trips again immediately, call an electrician.
Gas ovens — don't DIY
If you have a gas oven and it won't heat, do not attempt to dismantle or repair it yourself. Gas appliance repairs must only be carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers. Go Assist works with approved local Gas Safe partners.
