Washing Machine Maintenance Guide — Bournemouth
A well-maintained washing machine lasts longer and runs more efficiently. Here are the maintenance tasks our Bournemouth engineers recommend.
Clean the filter monthly
The pump filter (usually behind a small door at the bottom-right of the machine) traps coins, lint and debris. Blocked filters cause drainage faults and can burn out the pump. Clean it every 4–6 weeks.
Run a hot maintenance wash
Low-temperature washes don't kill bacteria or fully dissolve detergent residue. Run an empty 90°C cycle with a washing machine cleaner tablet every month. This removes limescale, mould and residue from the drum and seals.
Leave the door ajar
After each wash, leave the door slightly open to allow the drum and door seal to dry. This prevents mould growth on the rubber seal — one of the most common avoidable faults.
Don't overload
Overloading puts strain on the drum bearings and motor. Fill the drum no more than three-quarters full for most cottons programmes. Heavier loads should be split into two washes.
Use the right amount of detergent
Too much detergent produces excess foam that can block pipes and damage the pump. Modern machines use less water than older models — check your detergent dosage instructions and reduce if your machine is under 8 years old.
